Before setting out for Hajj

Before setting out for Hajj: The Most Important Spiritual Preparation for Every Pilgrim

Hajj is not just a journey of the body — it is a journey of the heart. Long before a pilgrim steps onto the plane, long before the ihrām is worn, and long before the talbiyah rises from the tongue, the heart must be prepared to stand before Allah in the most sacred days of a believer’s life.

Among all the checklists, packing guides, and logistical preparations, there is one question every pilgrim must ask:

“What is the most important thing I should do before Hajj in terms of my ʿaqīdah and inner state?”

The answer, according to the scholars of the past and present, is beautifully simple:

  • Purify your Tawḥīd and
  • make sincere tawbah.

Everything else flows from these two foundations.

1. Renewing Tawḥīd: The Heart of Hajj

Hajj is the greatest physical expression of Tawḥīd. Every ritual — from the talbiyah to the ṭawāf — proclaims the Oneness of Allah. For this reason, the heart must be cleansed of anything that contradicts or weakens that Oneness.

What does this purification look like?

  • Removing any form of shirk, major or minor
(reliance on charms, amulets, graves, saints, astrologers, or believing others can bring benefit or harm independently of Allah, loving, honoring, fearing or attaching one's heart to the dead or alive in a manner that is to be done only for Allah).
  • Avoiding innovations (bidʿah) in belief or worship, (like adopting things, actions, adhkar and thoughts that are not to be found in the Deen brought by our beloved Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him.)
  • Strengthening certainty in Allah’s Names and Attributes.
  • Renewing trust, love, fear, and hope in Allah alone.

A heart anchored in pure Tawḥīd is the heart most ready to say:

“Labbayk Allāhumma Labbayk.”

"Here I am, O Allah, here I am!

Here I am, You have no partner, here I am!

Truly, all praise, favor, and sovereignty belong to You.

You have no partner."

2. Sincere Tawbah: The Door to a Hajj Mabrūr

Before entering the sacred land, the pilgrim must enter a sacred state — the state of repentance.

Tawbah is not a formality. It is a cleansing. A reset. A return.

True tawbah has four conditions:

Once we ponder on ourselves and realize where we fall short we must we must take the steps toward a sincere repentance which involve:
  1. Stopping the sin immediately
  2. Feeling genuine remorse
  3. Resolving never to return
  4. Restoring the rights of others (if the sin involved another person)

Hajj wipes away sins, but the heart must first acknowledge what needs to be wiped. The Haji, after his or her Haj comes out clean and pure as if he or she is a newborn!

3. Restoring the Rights of People

A pilgrim cannot walk toward Allah while carrying the weight of injustice on their shoulders.

This means:

  • Returning debts
  • Fulfilling trusts
  • Seeking forgiveness from those we may have hurt
  • Making duʿā’ and giving charity on behalf of those we cannot reach

A heart that is light, clean, and free from grudges is a heart ready for the sacred journey.

4. Purifying Intention (Ikhlāṣ)

Hajj is an act of worship that must be done solely for Allah.

Not for:

  • social approval
  • photos
  • status or putting the title of Haji before the names
  • or as something to boast about as an achievement

Ikhlāṣ is the secret ingredient of a Hajj Mabrūr.

5. Cultivating Humility and Patience

Hajj is a test of:

  • patience
  • humility
  • emotional control
  • submission

Preparing the heart for these qualities before departure makes the journey smoother and more spiritually fruitful. Patience being one of the most important factors that can help you achieve a peaceful, hassle free and accepted Hajj. by avoiding any form of argument, useless discussions, show of anger and hastiness, and fights you are actually fulfilling the command of Allah. Allah the Almighty says in the Qur'an:

Hajj is [during] well-known months, so whoever has made Hajj obligatory upon himself therein [by entering the state of ihram], there is [to be for him] no sexual relations and no disobedience and no disputing during Hajj. And whatever good you do - Allah knows it. And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is fear of Allah. And fear Me, O you of understanding.

To put it short...

Before Hajj, the most important action is to purify your Tawḥīd and make sincere tawbah — cleansing the heart from shirk, sins, and the rights of others — so you stand before Allah with a sound heart.

This is the true beginning of Hajj.

Not at the airport.
Not at the miqāt.
Not in Makkah.

But in your own HEART,

just between you and Allah; in the quiet, honest moments before you leave — when your heart turns back to Allah.

Hajj: In the Noble Qur'an

Hajj is not merely a journey to Makkah — it is a journey into the heart of surrender. The Qur’an speaks about Hajj with a blend of history, law, spirituality, and symbolism. It ties the pilgrim to Prophet Ibrāhīm عليه السلام, to the Kaʿbah, and to the timeless call that still echoes across the world. Hajj embodies all the forms of worship like prayers, charity and sacrifice. The pilgrim is set on a journey that requires physical, spiritual and emotional strength. One must be equipped with the required knowledge about all the rituals of this great act of worship. Patience and good character during this journey and complete submission to the Will of Allah can guarantee an accepted Hajj, by the Will and Grace of Almighty Allah.  1. The Origin of Hajj: Ibrāhīm’s Call Surah Al‑Hajj 22:27 وَأَذِّن فِي النَّاسِ بِالْحَجِّ يَأْتُوكَ رِجَالًا وَعَلَىٰ كُلِّ ضَامِرٍ يَأْتِينَ مِن كُلِّ فَجٍّ عَمِيقٍ ‎ Allah commands Ibrāhīm عليه السلام to proclaim the pilgrimage: “Proclaim to th...

Why I wear Hijab.

The topic of Hijab has always been a controversial topic for many among those who are not Muslims and even among those who are Muslims.  When something is not understood clearly and is approached with a stance that is personal and emotional then it is indeed a matter of doubt and uncertainty. But, when you intend to understand something sincerely and try to find out its origin and meaning from the most authentic sources then there remains no doubt and hesitation and you tend to accept it readily with ease. The same goes for the topic of Hijab. Most of the people think that Hijab is a choice and not a command by Allah in the Noble Quran and they present various points to prove it.  I am just a student of Al Quran and I myself did not wear Hijab till I entered University. But one fine day, by the Will of Allah, I was reading the Chapter 24 The Light (An Noor) in the Quran. I came across the famous verses on Hijab and I felt something inside my heart. I realized that these are...
